    Thumbs down Engine Size

    Hello,

I recently purchased a scout 800a which came with a v8. I've found that these scouts came with an option of two v8 engines: a 266 or a 304. The motor is pretty dirty, but I have pulled it and looked on every flat surface for a plate with some information. So far I have come up with nothing other than 217144r2 AJ and a bore size of 3.875. Does anybody know where I could go to find out the engine size?

    Thank you,

    Mike

    Mike,

You have a V-304 engine. If that number you found had been 217145 R2, it would have been a V-266.

I was under the impression that the 304 was used in 69 and later, but with IH, you never know. Somebody could have swapped in a 266 very easily. The 800A is the 69/70 model.

I have run across early (late 50s medium and one from a 68 scout) 266 engines that had nothing on the pad where the engine size is located. Heard about blank ones in other sizes that had been rebuilt at one point, but never saw one myself. No idea why anybody would do that.

    Default Engine size

I have a 1967 IH pick up with a 304 in it. The line ticket shows that indeed a 304 was in it at the factory and it has 304 stamped on the block. Everything I research shows that 304 was not in use untill 1969?
Has anyone run into this before?

My 1960 B series fire truck came with a 304.

The 304 was in use in pickups and travelalls starting in 1959, and was used in medium duty trucks prior to that, as was the 266. Scouts did not get V8 engines at all until mid-67, and through 68 they got 266 engines. The 266 was discontinued in 69, and the 304 became the smallest of the SV series. By 69, there had already been a piston design change, from contoured to flat top pistons, with a corresponding change in the heads.

Keep in mind, the SV engines were not designed for scouts. They were made for dump trucks, and originated in the 60s. The 392 was the last of the series to appear, and that was in 1966. The 304 and 345 were in production before the first scout rolled off the assembly line.

    Default V304 History

Thanks for the history education on the 304. I am new to the IH following and have not yet got up to speed on a lot of the technical data. I am quite impressed with this site and the free exchange of information. I am looking forward to going to a IH gathering and meeting some of the group.
    Thanks again,
    Mike
