    Default New Scout Owner

Just picked up a 79 Traveler with the leaking/warped ThermoQuad carb sitting in the front seat. I'm in need of a replacement and was hoping for some suggestions from the pros. It has a 345 engine which I am told is pretty strong (I am keeping my fingers crossed on that one). Any help would be appreciated.

I've been told that the t-quad is not that hard to rebuild. They were used quite a bit on old caddilacs and other GM products, which gives you a good source of bases. The nice thing about the t-quad is that it only opens up the secondaries as much as it needs. Good fuel economy.

If you want a new carb, the Edelbrocks are a pretty good choice. Holley also makes a small 4 barrel that works very well. You don't need much cfm. These engines live below 4000 rpm, and you really don't want it above 3700 for more than a minute in a pinch. Keep it at 3700 or below and it will run there 24/7 in anything smaller than about 30,000 lbs gross.

    Thumbs up Thanks Allen E!

I'm pretty new to the IH world so I appreciate the comments. I would prefer to rebuild but I can't find anyone in my small town who wants to mess with it so I will probably look for the Edelbock you suggested. Any good sources on the web?

When you say it's "warped" how bad is it? In my personal opinion I would just give Summit/Jegs or IHonlyNorth a shout and pick-up a 550-650cfm depending on your application. The Thermoquad's had a plastic body and were real similar to the Quadra-Jets...however they can be a bit tricky to rebuild if you don't have any experience with them. Good Luck.
