    Default diesel problems

ok guys,my 1980 terra and i were coming home on friday and the old girl decided to what i can determine is wipe a set of rings. The truck fell on it face and statred to smoke heavily when i got pulled over to check it out the vent for the block along with the dipstick tube had oil spuing out of them. With out pulling the motor this is the best guess i have.
Please let me know if any of you have had this problem.

    thanks

Sounds like a cracked head. Bad rings wouldn't make it start throwing oil out of the breather and dipstick tube. Was the smoke white or black? Where did it seem to be coming from?

it was most defently oil smoke. it was being blown from the breather tube (down by the oil pan) and the dip stick tube.

From the sounds of this and the message you sent earlier, I'd lean more towards the engine eating a valve. Your oil pan is getting pressure from somewhere that it obviously shouldn't be, and that means something in the head. Tear the head down and see what you find, or if you have a borescope you might be able to inspect it without taking the head off. Take out the injectors and it'll give you a good view of what's inside the chambers.

Also, no oil pressure could be a factor with it all, too, and a pretty serious one. The oil pumps on these engines don't have any pressure on the system if there's no oil to pump. You can either pull your oil pan and check out your pump, or you can re-tap the hole for the sending unit and hook up an after-market oil gauge (the non-electric style). Either way, I'd say check to make sure you're still going to get oil through the system when you fix the top end problems.

sounds like a plan to start in the top end. i am dreding it cause winter is setting in and its old school gravel drive way wrecning for me.(no garage) when i swaped the good motor for the bad this spring i changed the oil. I used a 15w 40 diesel oil, ever since then the oil pressure gauge would ride on the high mark. I read the owners manuel and it suggested regular oil so i figured the thicker oil was just making the gauge register higher pressure.

I've always used Rotella 15w-40 in mine; figure I've got enough money wrapped up in rebuilding it that I ought to spend the money for good oil. But go ahead and tear into the head and see what's wrong with your engine. I don't know of any better way to diagnose it from here.

Nice. At least it wasn't the head though. Pistons are a "slightly" easier problem to deal with. And a lot less expensive. Have you thought of where you're going to look for parts?
