Default 1976 Scout II Speedometer sticking/bouncing

I am a new Scout owner and have a 1976 Scout II. I've got to get it to pass inspection before I can get the title registered however I have a small problem. The speedometer bounces all over the place and at resting will stick either at "0" or anywhere up to 20mph. I was told it might be the magnetic coupler. I had the cable lubed, but the mechanic said its probably in the dash itself. Any suggestions?

In my experience, a "bouncy" speedometer means a bad cable, not a bad speedo.

Thanks for the responses, I will look into that. Regarding a cable, I've noticed there are different lengths etc... Do you happen to know exactly what I'd need?

You need at least 83 inches for a Scout II. You can get away with the 83 or 100.
