I would guess 3-6 db, so twice to 4 times as loud in engineering terms. Not much louder at all. By the time you're in the "loud engine" range, the wind noise is still the biggest factor.

10% louder is not a realistic term, because it's less than 1 db. 40% louder is between 1 and 2 db, also not a realistic term. Sorry about being nerdy about this, but I tossed it in because I don't really know what anybody means when they say 40%.

If you're talking about what a typical human considers normal conversation in a quiet room, that's about 65 db. 75 db is 10 times that loud. 85 db is 100 times that loud, and most stereo speakers put out about that much at ONE WATT, with 88 db being the standard for the industry. 95 db, which is shouting in somebody's face, is 1000 times as loud as that quiet conversation.

To answer your question as best I can, I would say "not much louder at all." The diesel is not very loud when the muffler is working.
